Judit Polgar - E. Bareev

We're all rooting for Judit!

Judit Polgar - E. Bareev (game 3)

1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.exd5 (immediate change from game 1 where she played 3.Nx3)

3...cxd5 4.c4 Nf6 5.Nc3 Nc6 6.Bg5 dxc4 7.Bxc4 Qxd4 8.Qxd4 Nxd4 9.O-O-O e5 10.f4 Bg4 11.Nf3 Nxf3 12.gxf3 Be6 (I am not an expert in the Caro-Kann but I believe that this is a new move. The previously played moved is 12...Bxf3. I like 13.Bb5+ here. White seems to be doing fine and I think this is the kind of position she needs. This is the first time in the match that she has a decent position.)

13.Bd3 (This is another option but I still prefer the more aggressive 13.Bb5+Nd7 14. Rhe1 f6 15. Bh4 Rd8 16. fxe5 Kf7 17. f4 and White holds an edge.)

13...Be7 (This is too passive. A good alternative would be 13...Rc8 14.fxe5 Nd7 and Black is fine. Now, 14. fxe5 Nd7 15. Bxe7 Kxe7 16. f4 and White retains a slight edge.)

14.f5 (I think Judit wants to keep the game more complicated instead of the more clear cut 14.fxe5)

14...Bd7 15.Rhe1 O-O-O = 16.Rxe5 Bd6 17.Re2 Bc6 (Still pretty much an even position)

18.Ne4 Be5 (I actually prefer 18.Be4 a little better)

19.Bh4 (I like this move. The idea is to retreat to g3 to challenge the White Bishop on e5.)

19...Rd5 20.Nxf6 gxf6 21.Be4 Rxd1 22.Kxd1 (This position is equal. I don't think there will be a decisive result.)

22...Bxe4 (I don't think this is an optimal move. This move allows White to straighten out the pawns and regain a slight edge. I would have played 22...Rd8+.)

23.fxe4 Rg8 += 24.Kc2 Kd7 25. Kd3 Rg4 26.Be1 Rg1 27. Bf2 (Judit has played this endgame well so far. She is still maintaining the slight edge.)

27...Rd1+ 28. Kc2 Rh1 29. Bxa7 h5 30. Bd4 (A move that I did not expect. It does not really do much one way or another.)

30...Bxd4 31. Rd2 Kc7 32. Rxd4Rxh2+ 33. Kc3 h4 34. a4 Rh1 35.Rd3 Kc6 36.Kc4 = b6 37.Rc3 Kb7 38.Rd3 Ka6 (Now 39.Kd5 gives White excellent chances!)

39.b4?! (This only leads to a smaller advantage. The pawn was better off not being on b4.)

39...h3 40.Kd5 Rh2 (Black should be able to hold this.)

41.Kd6 Re2 42.Rxh3 Rxe4 43.Rh8 Rxb4 44.Ke7 Rxa4 45.Kxf7 (This is a drawn endgame. Judit's best shot would have come on move 39 with Kd5.)

45...Kb5 46. Kxf6Ra1 47. Rc8 Kb4 48. Kg6 Rg1+ 49. Kf7 b5 50. f6 Ka3 51. Ra8+ (Still a dead drawn position.)

51...Kb3 52.Rg8 Rf1 53.Rg5 b4 54.Ke6 Kc4 55.f7 Rxf7 56.Kxf7 b3 1/2

My guess is Judit may play 1.Nf3 to surprise Evgeny.

Hahahah, nice picture.

That would really cheer me up if I were playing.

Best wishes to Judit.

Awesome pic, by the way :) Go Judit go!

The photo says it all.

If Susan possesses the virtues of valuing family, and children in general, as well as being a professional chess player, then she will be a fine addition to the USCF board.

After 1. e4 the following will be something like

0-1

:-}

Does she go online to see? Would be a shame to miss the good wishes.

after 1. e4 c6

Can Black win a pawn with 11. ...Nxf3 12. gxf3 Bxf3? it does look dangerous but I can't find a way to attack the black king (e.g. 13.Bb5+ Bc6)

Finally Kasim is testing Gelfand with some sharp play

Adams-Shirov looked nice for a while but now it will be a draw. I guess the whole sac and its outcome was calculated by Adams

very difficult to win for Judit now. A draw looks very likely

Bacrot ready to play f5. I think Bacrot's Qd6 was pretty clever in that it tricked Kamsky into playing a quick Ne4, so that Bacrot can start a kingside pawn storm with tempo on the knight. Nf1 looked a better move

Carlsen has a nice position against Aronian; his knight will go to f5 soon.

Anonymous said...

that's why aronian's knight will be waiting on d6:)

not sure about 24. h6 by carlsen...
levon can play rc2 or rc4 with a pleasant position now...

Unable to decide between Rc2 and Rc4 he went for Rc3...

Anonymous said...

well he decided for rc3...:)
typically aronian...looks good anyway

well there is a point...carlsen should be aiming to play f4 at some point, but now it will be met by rg8

I looked for Judit to really launch "a big serve" in this game. Why? With a draw she is down 1 with black in 2 out of the last 3 games. Bareev's Caro-Kahn is a prudent choice against the tactical likes of Judit-reference Botvinnik and Karpov's results against Tal and Spassky in their respective matches. It will not be easy to make headway against 2 white slow queenspawn games.

aronian has the better game i think, the only aber being that his king has a long way to walk to join the action carlsen on the other hand hardly has a reasonable move at hand

Anonymous said...

so magnus played nf5...
quite nice actually..

Anonymous said...

Have you seen the last moves, Magnus s winning !
Well played both!

Anonymous said...

Gurevich has a winning combination if I'm not wrong; starting with 23 ... NxB
What do you think Susan?

Anonymous said...

looks unclear to me...
levon has the two queenside pawns and magnus rook is both good and awkward protecting the h6 pawn... i think magnus has to play d6

Help!

Any URL where these games can be followed live? Besides playchess.com, which I can't get to at this moment.

Carlsen won by the way! Well done.

ok that is just too funny. carlsen beat aronian

Anonymous said...

Now Aronian should put Caoli tou distract Carlsen's attention! (or is he too young for this?)

Anonymous said...

Anonymous 10:40:00 AM, he is not "too young for this", just "too young for her".

Anonymous said...

Kamsky again won on time, am I wrong?

Anonymous said...

No, Bacrot resigned after 36. c7 as he must lose a piece to prevent the pawn from queening.

Nooo. She is too old for him -:)

Do you think Gurevich can pull out a win from the position?

Anonymous said...

anon 12:09:00 PM , it is more likely that Gurevich can pull a rabit from the position rather than a win :-)

While I am definitely rooting for Judit, it seems as though she is not at her best form. I certainly hope she fights back in the latter half of the match and wins.

Go Judit!

Anonymous said...

Yea, at this level you need very good opening preparation, almost like a science lab, u know. The greatest players like Kasparov, Kramnik, ... all have/had a team of analysts working fulltime for them on the openings! Researching and fine-tuning all the variations.

Judit seems to be in not her best form at this moment...

Let's hope she can survive Bareev!
I still root for her!! Tho i must admit i don't think her level is the best here.

She is also a fulltime mother and all... you just cannot have it all at once, i guess...

Still big respect for the only woman chess player at this level!!
