Black vs Spassky for charity

AM to take on former chess champ Spassky
May 8 2008 by Robin Turner, Western Mail

SWANSEA-BASED South West Wales AM Peter Black is to pit his wits against former world chess champion Boris Spassky later this month.

The AM will play the star for charity on May 25 at Booth’s Bookshop in Hay-on-Wye.

Mr Black said: “I will be one of 20 people taking part in a simultaneous chess display against Mr Spassky.”

The Welsh Liberal Democrat, although not expecting to win, at least hopes to give the Russian expert a game while raising money for ChildLine.

He said in an appeal to potential sponsors: “It has been suggested I seek sponsorship for each move I make but as I am not really that good then that could limit the money I am able to raise.

“If you prefer to do that however, please do. Otherwise please offer what you can afford.”

Which colour will the AM be playing?

Black, of course.

Ummm... what's an "AM" when it's at home? I've heard of GM, IM, even CM, but "AM"... that's a new one.

Maybe it's because of Descartes... "I think, therefore I AM"..

No, No, you have it wrong.

His title is AM because the match will be in the morning!

If the match was in the evening, then his title would be PM.

Elementary my dear sausage monger.

Peter Black is, apparently, the Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for South Wales West.

So he's an Assembly Member... therefore, an AM. I'm astonished you bloggers don't know that kind of thing.

Silly Americans.
