1 .. Rc2+
2 Kb1 Rxb2+
3 Kxb2 Qd2+
4 Ka3 Qd6+
5 Kb2 Rd2+

5 .. Rd2+ is an illegal move above.

Try this:

1 .. Rc2+
2 Kb1 Qd2

protecting h6 pawn and threatening mate with Rb2 and then Qb2

Alas, 3. Qxh6#

No, black's Qd2 protects the h6 pawn, so

3 Qxh6? Qxh6
4 Kxc2

black wins Q for R

Yes, 2 .. Qd2 is more efficient.
What is illegal about 5 .. Rd2+?

1... Rc2+!! 2. Kb1 (2. Kxc2 Qd2+ 3. Kb1 Qxe1+ 4. Ka2 Qxg3 win a rook.) 2... Qd2 followed by 3...Rxb2 black must win.

"What is illegal about 5 .. Rd2+?"

Rook at d8 can't jump over the Queen at d6 to get to d2. Am I missing something obvious?

Quoting my friend The Turk: "1... Rc2+!! 2. Kb1 (2. Kxc2 Qd2+ 3. Kb1 Qxe1+ 4. Ka2 Qxg3 win a rook..."

White still has some play i.e.
5. Qxh6+ Kg8 only move
6. Qxf6 threatening the Rook; and now what? I tried:
6..Rb8
7. Qg5+ QxQ
8. hxQ Kg7
Ok, now I see that the White pawns can be stopped. The Rook advantage is too much to oppoze.
