MANILA, Philippines – Tagaytay-RP fell short of clinching the 2008 Asian Club Cup team chess tournament title when they suffered a 2.5-1.5 loss to Qi Yuan Club of China in Thursday’s final round at the Al Ain Chess Center in the United Arab Emirates.

Grandmasters Wesley So, John Paul Gomez and Darwin Laylo halved the point from their Chinese opponents while GM Mark Paragua was the lone casualty losing at board three as the Filipinos finished fourth in the match-play tournament.

So, Gomez and Laylo were forced to a draw against fellow GMs Wang Hao, Zhou Jianchao and Wen Yang while Paragua lost to the untitled Zhou Weiqi.

Al Ain Chess Club of UAE, led by GMs Sergey Karjakin and Zahar Efimenko of Ukraine, won the $20,000 (14,314 euros) top purse after compiling 12 points in the week-long team tournament.

China also finished with 12 points but came in second based on the Olympiad-Sonneborn-Berger-Tiebreak format.

So and Laylo also finished sixth and 10th in the individual rankings. – GMANews.TV

Yeah Campo, go pay up your 12 million pesos you stole from the Filipino people!

Stop with the 12 million pesos already. It's getting old. We know the same person posted both of those posts, ok?

Well, here we are seeing the future of Philippine chess. We still need a lot of work especially if we expect to compete at the highest levels. It's a nice start but only a start.

I can't believe some of the yoyos who post at some Philippine blogs that say this should have been the Olympic team! Oh pleeze... they came in fourth in a competition of mostly mediocre Asian teams. They couldn't pull off the big wins against China or Al Ain.

Nevertheless, it's a start. I think we'll be seeing some better results in the Olympiad within the nxt five to ten years if this pattern holds up.

OK, put Villamayor on Board 1 then.

Oh pleeze yoyo....

The 46th-place finish by the Philippine team at Dresden was the worst-ever in our Olympiad history.

Can't believe some yoyo in Philippine blog can't seem to notice this fact.

What mediocre standard this yoyo have.

No, we won't be seeing better results if you are in charge of the selection process coz you prefer putting the second stringers and bypassing greats like Torre, Antonio and Paragua.

Next time, i'm sure you'll require even Wesley or Gomez to go through a qualifying tournament as well.

I think you're goal is to make it to the top 50. Yeah, coz you like being a Loser.

Wesley, Gomez and Paragua went through the Philippine team qualifying tournament. Torre and Antonio should have played too.

And Paragua's loss in the last round cost the team a place in the top places.

And I agree that that Campo blogger is a yoyo.

It should be go Pichay!

And of course the young Philippine talents will do well in the future, that is a no brainer.

But they ain't going far, as China and India, maybe Vietnam too, are already way ahead of the Philippines.

Yoyokosabe.
