Nat’l Age-Group chess tilt
unfolds in Cadiz tomorrow
It’s all systems go for the 2013 National Age-Group Chess Championships –
Visayas leg that will open tomorrow in Cadiz City.
Participants will compete in six age-groups: the boys and girls’ 20 years old
and below, 14-under, 12-under, 10-under and 8-under.
The four-day tournament will feature outstanding chess talents in the region
who will vie for the qualifying slots in the national finals set in Manila.
Winner in the grand finals will have the privilege to represent the country
in the 2013 ASEA Age-Group Championship set in Thailand on June 8 to 17, and
also don the Philippine colors in the 2013 Asian Youth Chess Championships in
Mashad, Iran on June 20 to 27.
Participants in the Visayas leg will play six to seven round Swiss System
with the top two winners in both boys and girls’ division advancing to the
national finals along with the seeded players and other champions from the
region.
The winners will also receive prizes and trophies from the organizers.
Earlier, tournament organizers announced that the competition will be held in
Capiz but opted to transfer the venue in Cadiz City, Negros Occidental after
typhoon Quinta caused severe flooding in some parts of Roxas City.
The city government of Cadiz, meanwhile, headed by Mayor Patrick Escalante
accepted the offer to host the tournament to boost the city sports tourism
program.
Tasked to supervise the competition is Grandmaster Jason Gonzalez with
international arbiter Gene Poliarco as chief arbiter.*NAB
