Famous Birthdays March 9: Bobby Fischer

Bobby Fischer was born at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago, Illinois on March 9, 1943

Bobby Fischer was an American chess grandmaster. At age 13, Fischer won a ‘brillancy’ that became known as The Game of the Century. In the early 1970’s he became one of the most dominant players in history. In 1972, he captured the World Championship from Boris Spassky. The match, held in Reykjavík, Iceland, attracted more worldwide interest than any chess match before or since. Fischer declined to defend his title. He reappeared in 1992 to play an unofficial rematch against Spassky.

In his last years, he made increasingly anti-American and anti-semitic statements. After his U.S. passport was revoked over the Yugoslavia sanctions issue, he was detained by Japanese authorities for nine months in 2004 and 2005 under threat of deportation. In March 2005, Iceland granted him full citizenship. The Japanese authorities then released Fischer to Iceland, where he lived until his death in 2008.

Bobby Fischer is, still today, a legend for anyone who has played chess any time.

When can Susan Polgar reveal the results of the Polgar-Fischer match of Fischer Random games?

Susan! Have you read the book "Endgame: Bobby Fischer's Remarkable Rise and Fall - from America's Brightest Prodigy to the Edge of Madness" by Frank Brady?

If so what did you think? Is it accurate and worth reading?
