Fisher was way ahead of his time untill 1975 when he wasn't into competitive chess. His rating would increase.

I found it so bitter-sweet watching this video. Such a brief, blinding meteor. Truly great American chessplayers born on American soil flash in the sky brilliantly for a few years and then crash and burn: Morphy, Pillsbury, Fischer. So sad, but we are immensely richer for their albeit short presence.

I should have mentioned Reuben Fine, as well. He saw the danger, and opted for a notable career as a New York shrink. A meteor that could have been.
