The University of Maryland, Baltimore County's chess team placed second this week in an international chess competition and will next compete in a championship to determine the top college chess team in the U.S.
The Pan-American Intercollegiate Team Chess Championship, also known as the World Series of College Chess, was held over four days in Lubbock, Texas. UMBC's team beat out about 40 other universities and was bested only by a team from Webster University in Missouri.
The World Series of College Chess pits college teams from the Americas and the Caribbean, though most teams are from the U.S. UMBC's teams have won the competition nine times since the mid-1990s. The team members use unique nicknames, according to UMBC. They include Niclas "The Dark Knight" Huschenbeth, Akshayraj "The Indian Knight" Kore, Levan "The Georgian Gangster" Bregadze and Nazi "The Black Widow" Paikidze. The university's team will next go on to the President's Cup, a chess competition to determine the national champion. UMBC placed third in that competition in 2013.
