Wesley So will switch federation to the US

I was about to board a flight when I made this post. Therefore, I had to keep the explanation short. I just added a few more things to make more sense for Wesley's fans and supporters.

Below is the letter from Grandmaster Wesley So to the President of the NCFP. Wesley offered last year to represent the Philippines one last time at the upcoming Olympiad in Tromsø if the NCFP consents for him to switch federation immediately after the Olympiad.

This offer was not accepted (ignored). Therefore, Wesley had to follow proper FIDE procedures by filing the necessary paperwork, and not competing in official FIDE events for 2 years. Because of this, he will not be able to play for the Philippines in Norway.

Wesley made no deal with the U.S. Therefore, there can be zero expectation that the US will pay the 50,000 euros to the NCFP. He definitely could not afford to pay this fees from his own pocket as a full time college student. He also heard nothing from the NCFP President, even though the deadline to register for the Tromsø Olympiad was June 1, 2014, more than one week ago.

This was an agonizing personal decision for Wesley. But it had to be done. He really wanted to represent the Philippines one last time. But it was not meant to be as he did not receive the green light from the NCFP in consenting the switch. Now that the deadline has past, it is too late. Wesley went on to make other chess commitments.

Wesley takes his chess very seriously and he cannot afford to let his career flounder without any communication or direction from his national federation. Because of this, he told me that a move had to be made. By writing this letter, Wesley hopes that the NCFP will not stand in the way and delay his progress toward the top 10. For his sake, I hope so too.

Dear Cong Pichay,

I would like to share my thoughts about changing federations. I hope you have the time to read my letter. I appreciate your understanding in advance.

First of all, I would like to thank you for your past support. I am proud to be Filipino, and I will always be a Filipino at heart. I will never forget where I came from.

However, circumstances have changed. My family has permanently moved to Canada. I now live and attend school full time in the United States (at Webster University). I plan to reside permanently here. This is where I will have the opportunity to improve my chess, and make a decent living as a professional player. I want to be able to play in top level tournaments ... to get to the next level.

I have filed the paperwork to switch federation to the US last year. I respectfully ask that you grant me this opportunity and consent my transfer.

If you choose not to approve my transfer request, I have no way of paying the 50,000 euros fees to the NCFP. Therefore, I will have no choice but to sit out another year to fulfill my full two year waiting period so no transfer fees are needed. This will not benefit the NCFP at all. However, it will severely slow down my progress by not being able to play in official FIDE events such as the World Cup, World Blitz and Rapid Championships, etc. I will be forced to miss the next World Championship cycle.

Because of the 2-year waiting period rule of FIDE, I am not able to compete in the World Rapid and Blitz Championships in Dubai next week. I will also not be able to compete in the upcoming Olympiad in Norway.

This is not an easy decision. But it is the best decision for me to have a chance to be a top 10 player in the world, and perhaps one day fight for the World Championship crown. I hope you will support my decision and allow me to make this change immediately so I can have a chance to chase my dream without losing more valuable time at this very important age.

Thank you!

Respectfully yours,
Wesley So

Why Pichay didn't consent? Strange.

That is by far an excellent decision you made Wesley So, switching Federation from Philippines to US, we support your transfer. There is no point to stay with NCFP headed by a corrupt politician Prospero Pichay back up by fellow Filipino GM's with crab mentality like GM Gonzales. If switching to the US will improve your chances of moving upward in the ranking then go ahead. We know that even if you represent the US in chess competitions you will still be Filipino at heart and you will always be as the best Philippine chessplayer ever in the same breath as GM Eugene Torre. Again do what is best for your career, playing for US is much better. Good luck and Good Bless.

PAGING US Chess Federation: # 15 Wesley So will be transfering to your federation and needs 50,000 euros transfer fees before being able to play for the US Flag in chess competition. Can anyone shelve some? Mr Rex Sinquefield perhaps can throw some 50 k euro to hasten the transfer. The US lost Caruana to Italy at least we can somehow compensate the loss by taking in Wesley So. Imagine having Nakamura, So and Kamsky in Chess Olympiad 3 above 2700 plus GM representing the US it would be great. Hope any officials of US Chess Federation or Mr Sinquefield read this.

Is it my understanding that as per Fide rules during transfer and in case of non consent by present federaration to new federation, Wesley So will not be able to compete in Fide events that would entail representing the Philippines. Are these events limited to team events or include individual events? Like Wesley So will not be able to compete in the World Bliz and Rapid Championship in Dubai, Tromso Chess Olympiad in August, World Cup next year, Zonal Championships etc? Or all Fide events whether team or individual? What events will Wesley So allowed to play in Fide sanctioned events? 1 more year and off to US. US chess rocks :)

Great decision Wesley So, WE SUPPORT your decision to change federation from Philippines to US. It is sad for Philippine Chess but you have no alternative as the NCFP its not supportive of you. What can you expect from a chess body being run by corrupt politician and selected supporting cast with crab mentality. Now is your time to shine and the US needs you. Perhaps Mr Sibquefield my help support your chess career like he do to Nakamura. US Chess federation should at least help you raise the 50 k euro transfer fee so you can start playing for US in time for the Tromso Chess Olympiad.

Anonymous said...

There you go US Chess Federation. You lost Caruana, you gain Wesley So. At least show your support by helping him pay the 50,000 euros transfer fee so he can start playing for US in time for next month Chess Olympiad. US billionaires/millionaires who are avid supporter of US Chess show your support by helping the kid raise the 50,000 euro transfer fee so the US can have another 2700 plus player playing for US. Darn we now have Nakamura, So and Kamsky on our side. Strong US Chess Team.

Big mistake by Pichay to hold this young man back. It's a petty move.

A Public Plea of Support to Wesley So who will be changing Federation from Philippines to United States Of America Chess Federation: PLEASE help GM Wesley So to raise the 50 k euros transfer fees so he can start playing for US Flag. We need people like So so strengthen the US Chess which has sonehow weaken by the departure of GM Caruana to Italy. Wesley So is a great addition to US Chess. US Chess Officials and any avid US Chess supporter may show their support to facilitate the transfer ASAP by raising the 50 k euros transfer fees. US Chess Officials and fans/supported PLEASE show your support to Wesley So. GM Wesley So (USA), excellent.

WELCOME to the US Chess Federation GM Wesley So. Great addition to the US Flag. Thank you Philippine Chess Federation for "giving us" such a brilliant chess genuis.

All eyes are now on Prospero Pichay. Will he let Wesley switch or will he punish him by making him sit for one more year?

Pichay is a fat out of shape piece of dung. He's just going to pocket the 50,000 euros.

...strange. the philippines is importing players to beef up our weak national teams i.e soccer, basketball, tennis (even naturalizing them)! here is a world class filipino chess player, and we are giving him to another country. what a shame!!!

My message to GM Wesley So:

Although its painful to accept but being one of your loyal fans around the globe, I am supportive of your decision to switch federations. This is indeed one very, very tough decision to make but you have to do what's best for you and your future. You are THERE now, and your ascent to the ELITE GM level (2800 plateau) has been gaining momentum since your joining the SPICE program. I assure you all Filipino and non-Filipino fans all over the world would truly understand your decision. Your back is against the wall and you just have no choice at all. No matter what, your DNA remains Filipino, even though you will be representing the United Stated Federation from now on.

I strongly believe that bolting out of the CORRUPT National Chess Foundation of the Philippines headed by a known CORRUPT Congressman Prospero Pichay gives you a totally breath of fresh air.

This move is a new beginning to you. You just took away the last of the major psychological obstacle so you can totally focus on your ultimate objective: to be the future world championship challenger to Magnus Carlsen.

MABUHAY KA WESLEY SO!!! WE FILIPINOS WILL FOREVER SUPPORT YOUR CAUSE!!!

--------------------------------------

My message to GM Susan Polgar:

Coach, I salute you for being so kind-hearted and somehow 'saved' our dear Wesley from the jaws of the corrupt chess organization of the Philippines.

On behalf of the the entire Filipino supporters of HyperGM Wesley So, THANK YOU VERY MUCH! MARAMING SALAMAT PO!!!

Coach you don't have to say anything at this point. What you have been doing to Wesley is simply phenomenal. I don't have to be specific at this point but, as a coach and as a person, YOU HAVE GAINED RESPECT FROM THE ENTIRE CHESS WORLD!!!

You are a rarity Coach Susan. Your mentoring, mental toughness, approach to the game and most of all, your heart, is IMMEASURABLE!

May your SPICE Program reach far more greater heights.

May Webster U headed by Beth Stroble continue its unequivocal support to the SPICE program.

Coach Susan, I have only one favor to ask if you don't mind. Please monitor another young Filipino phenom in Alekhine Nouri. I hope his parents read this post. If they feel their son is being pigeon-hold by this known corrupt NCFP, they should approach you or you may reach out to his parents so he joins the SPICE program. This is another young talent that if treated like a pawn by the NCFP, his progress gets stymied and eventually goes down the drain (yet again).

My message to NCFP head Prospero Pichay:

"P*** MO!" Even Satan will be threatened by your sheer corruption. MAY YOU ROT IN HELL!!!

"Pinakawalan mo si Wesley, hayup ka!" (Translation: You let Wesley go, you moron!)

You will forever be in the annals of Philippine sports as the WORST NATIONAL CHESS FEDERATION LEADER EVER for giving up a potential future world champion!!!

I swear you will never ever succeed in your post. You, along with your other corrupt "inner-circle" where you only think of personal gains will go down. THIS UNPRECEDENTED MOVE BY WESLEY SO IS YOU AND YOUR COHORTS ULTIMATE DOWNFALL!

Lastly, when you eventually die, you have a lot of explaining to do to Him come final judgment.

-----------------------------------------

My message to Oliver Barbosa, JP Gomez & Paragua:

Oliver, as a fellow UPian, you better think twice of your future. You are smart therefore put that smartness into work. Either bolt out of NCFP and seek sponsorship from local patrons or you may ask Coach Susan if she could take you in her SPICE program. As Coach Susan mentioned, there are hundreds of applicants who want to join the program. Sheer talent alone cannot get you in but it's worth the try. There is no kind-hearted chess mentors in this world other than Coach Susan Polgar and her husband Paul Truong.

If you're not successful, go somewhere else in search of better opportunity.

You, JP Gomez and Mark Paragua now carry the Philippine colors.

Do not allow yourself be a prisoner of this corrupt NCFP organization.

THIS ORGANIZATION HAS BUNCH OF SNAKES AND CROCODILES!!!...And you deeply know that.

You definitely have the talent to reach the SuperGM level. But be realistic where you're at right now and ask yourselves of the following:

1. Were you provided by the NCFP a DEDICATED world-caliber Eastern European coach?

2. Were you being CONSTANTLY exposed to high-caliber tournaments around the world?

3. Were you given substantial monetary support ASIDE FROM A TAP ON YOUR BACKS and a hardware each time you have a decent finish in international tournaments?

4. Were all your requests being approved?

If all your answers to the above are "NO", then you know what to do.

Look guys, you are all stuck at 2500 level for years now. I'm sorry but I'm just being realistic and factual. I know this hurts but to make my point, 50% is sheer talent and the OTHER 50% comes from unconditional support from the people around you and from the organization who has the obligation to support you.

Look at Liem (Vietnam), look at Giri (Netherlands), they enjoy FULL SUPPORT from their respective federation and government. You know these young fellows practically started ON SAME FOOTING as you were.

Oliver, JP and Mark....don't you think it's about damn time to think of your future?

You are the the captain of your own ship.

My message to the Alekhine Nouri and to his parents:

You see what just happened to Wesley So. I hope you, being a young chess phenom, wouldn't put on the same situation where Wesley is. He had no choice at all but to make such life-changing decision. I would definitely do the same thing.

Mr. & Mrs Nouri, you already know how corrupt NCFP is. If I were you, seek somebody who will sponsor Alekhine so he can be provided with the best training, a dedicated Coach & proper exposure. There's SMC, SM, Manny Pangilinan. There's nothing wrong if you seek sponsorship from them. Don't get intimidated by the corrupt NCFP. Unless the government will purge the entire federation, you remain and will remain in that GARBAGE organization!!

Please think of your kid's unlimited potential and future.

Coach Susan has been monitoring Alekhine's progress and she might offer him to join the SPICE program IF...please take note..IF he continues his remarkable progress.

Therefore this kid needs your full support. Whatever support NCFP promises to Alekhine, take it with a grain of salt.

DO NOT BELIEVE WHAT THEY SAY, JUST WATCH WHAT THEY DO TO ALEKHINE!

All,

Is money the only road block? We can raise that money in a couple weeks with a Kickstarter campaign. I've got 200 bucks ready to go and all I would want is a sign letter of thanks from GM So, possible World Champion. There is little to no doubt in my mind the chess community (not big donors or organizations) would be able to get that money together before the summer is up.

Any reason we can't do this? or some other charitable donation via USChess? Where do I write the check?

GM Wesley So has two options. (1) If the Philippine Chess Federation CONSENTS to his transfer from Philippines, he can play for the United States of America Flag after transfer papers submitted to Fide is complete with NCFP CONSENT (2) If the Philippine Chess Federation REFUSED to give its CONSENT as in the case now, GM Wesley So has to pay the Philippine Chess Federation 50 k euros as transfer fees (for of release fee) OR if he does not have the money to pay the transfer fee of 50 k euros, he sits out for 2 years and desist from representing the Philippines in Fide Sponsored Events (eg World Chess Olympiad, World Cup, World Cup Qualifications like the Zonals, Candidates Masters, Fide Grand Prix Series, World Rapid and Blitz Championsionship, ASEAN or ASIAN games and any other Fide sponsored events. But he can play in Fide sanctioned events and he cannot represent the Philippines in any international chess events (akin to the case of stateless person). In any case, since GM Wesley So request for transfer had been filed last year, he has 1 more year left to comply with the 2 year waiting period if his previous federation did not give consent or he is unable to pay the 50 k euro transfer fee to NCFP.

Anonymous said...

€ 50,000 euros = $ 68,200 US Dollars more or less. GM Wesley So needs $ 68,200 as transferr fee so he changed federation from the Philippines to the United States Chess Federation and start playing under USA Flag in international chess competition. I hope the US Chess Federation will look into this seriously. Or chess fans and wealth chess supporter can chip in to raise the funds. I am excited for GM Wesley So to play for the United States of America.

Each side must do what is best for himself/his federation.

Wesley So owes it to himself to do everything he can to achieve greatness. He will always carry his native country and his native country will continue to root for him.

Mr. Pichay is responsible for Philippine chess and cannot favor one individual over everybody else. He must also do his best to carry out his responsibility and make difficult decisions based on fairness to all.

Anonymous said...

There's no argument Pichay as President of the NCFP looking for the best interest of everyone. But is he? For the first time since Eugene Torre, we have a world championship contender with the best chance of giving the PHL its first ever world title in chess. The least Pichay could have done is to take care of this golden asset in Wesley owing to his vast potential. But ever since he lost in the 2010 senatorial elections, he has practically abandoned Wes.

There's no problem if Wes opted for US citizenship, it's whats best for him and his family. But since he's a dual citizen, he can still play for the PHL. But because of the lack of support, he opted to ship out because he has no future here.

PHL basketball spends much on naturalizing American players to become Filipinos. Basketball is a team game and no one player can win a title. Yet, the basketball sports head is willing to spend so much to collar a topnotch American cager to reinforce our team.

Wes is a homegrown gem. The only thing he was asking for is financial support. Chess is a sport where individual honor is made. That one player can actually give so much prestige to the country on his own, and Wes has done that already. Why Wes has to be treated in equal footing with the other local chess players is mind-boggling. Special treatment is accorded to special talent.

Anonymous said...

Strange and sad indeed. What's ironic is that the Philippines won't even be able to compete at the world level even with naturalizing players in soccer, basketball and tennis whereas Wesley has already proven himself as a world class athlete.

Raising € 50,000 ($ 68,000) money to be paid as "RANSOM" money for the RELEASE of "KIDNAPPED/CAPTIVE" GM Wesley So. "Ransom" to be paid to rouge NCFP Officials headed by Commader Prospero Pichay and his trusted Sub-Commander GM Jayson Gonzales. The above rouge Commanders had been "Red Flag" in interpol and had been placed in the List of Most Wanted Persons by the FBI. Extreme Caution ADVISED to remaining Filipino GM's. Escape whily you still can. :d

Anonymous said...

You must be from the NCFP right? :d And talking about Pichay, do you really know what are you talking? Pichay only do things for the best interest of his self, he does not give a shit about others. The only readon why he is the NCFP President is because thats the only organization he can fool. Gee! Ask him what he has done as Congressman and Administrator of Local Water Administration Board where he was a chairman until he got axed for ghost projects and corruption. I guess you seem to be out of your mind with the best interest stuff lol

Anonymous said...

But I cannot understand why he needs to switch to US. Anand didn't switch to Spain when he was residing there for sometime. But he still became world champion 5 times. So what is stopping Wesley from doing the same? Wesley doesn't seem to give enough reasons to support his claim. Unless he says that he is on his way towards converting to become a US citizen, then that would be better grounds to switch federations. And I think FIDE should be stricter with these federation switching rules. This 2-year rule is not logical. You should actually be at least holding that country's passport first before you are allowed to switch over.

Anonymous said...

Maybe Pichay and that GM who are running the NCFP are hoping for that 50,000 Euro transfer fee before they will consent to the transfer.

Oh boy You need funding support to finance your training and to compete in tournaments, without it you will be stuck in a hole without any progress and there is not much high level tournaments in the Philippines, its a rare thing to conduct high level tourney in the Philippines. Wesley So isnt a rich boy to finance his trainings and travel abroad for competitions thats why he took Webster U scholarship and Susan Polgar as coach. The Philippines Chess Federation does not give a shit about its talented players, no more how talented you are without financial support from your federation for trainings and travel for competitions, you wont be going nowhere. Ask top level GM how costly it is to spent fir training and travel overseas for competitions. The US Chess Federation can provide the needed support to GM Wesley So in terms of extensive training, funding for competitions etc. If you cannot still understand the logic behind the transfer, then your a FOOL. Without funding, your just a piece of shit. Comprendo Amigo :d

Sometimes in life, there are decisions that we really need to sit down, plan & estimate the outcome whether we could able to make it or not [- whether it could lead us to victory or not]. Decisions that are worthwhile pondering, at times hard and difficult to obtain, choices that God and God’s wisdom in you alone could find a way.

As you are decided to change your federation from National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) into US Federation; it is great thing to see and to know that the once young independent little boy Wesley So to its parents (Philippines & Family) is now turns into a matured person - ready to leave as an interdependent person, explore the world, grow more, build another dreams and create history with an opportunity and privilege with another supportive family - US Chess Federation.

I strongly believe that you made a very reasonable decision. Considering the fact that we know that you are proud to be a Kababayan – Filipino, as always be and we are in you; willing to represent USA and the Pride of the Philippines.

Wherever you may go may the Lord’s guidance, protection and blessings are be upon you, as well as to the Philippine family and NCFP; to one of your greatest mentors Susan Polgar, family - Webster University, and US Federation.

If Wesley So filed the petition a year ago and only has one remaining "penalty" year, then the equivalent monetary penalty should also be half, or 25k euros. That should be easier to put up, and those "corrupt" PH chess officials will have less money to pocket.

Seriously, however, the issue here is NOT that Wesley cannot continue staying in the US while playing for PH. He can obviously do both. He has chosen to switch federations simply because he doesn't wish to continue playing FOR THE CURRENT PH federation. If this is so, then this IS THE PROBLEM that should be solved. There should be a way to get rid of unwanted officials instead of losing a gem for a country which needs it much more.

IMO Once you pay the € 50,000, their consent is IMMATTERIAL. If they give their consent, no need for the € 50 k transfer fee. If they don't consent, you pay NCFP the € 50,000 euro "RANSOM FEE" for the release of GM Wesley So akin to paying terrorist for the release of kidnapped victims. If I were the NCFP I will consent and release Wesley So to US Chess Federation. Anyway, we cant financially support him might as well give him the chance to grow and explore his potentials further for the sake of the Filipino race.

Anonymous said...

Perhaps this might be a good fund drive - " A dollar ($1) for GM Wesley So" Help GM Wesley So raise the € 50,000 euro ($68,000) so he can pay his TRANSFER FEES to the "vultures of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines headed by Prospero Pichay. In that way, he can RIGHT AWAY represent the United States of America in international chess competitions. This NCFP people are without conscience and are REFUSING to RELEASE or CONSENT the change of Federation from Philippines to USA of GM Wesley So.

There was a prior Philippine Chess Federation with 2 factions then. I remember the Philippines was suspended by Fide for quite some time for in fighting. Then with the late Fide President Campones (i hope i get his name right) they were succesful in delisting from Fide the Philippines Chess Federation and a new Federation, the National Chess Federation was born. I think the problem with NCFP when politics started crippling the organization especially when they elected a known corrupt former Congressman and Local Water Utility Board Chairman Prospero Pichay. Then back it up with supporting cast of twisted NCFP officials like GM Gonzales, then you get a messy organization. They should have give the NCFP Presidency to Eugene Torre or some more capable than the present officials. Although not all of them are corrupt though but their head is. RIP Chess. If NCFP President Pichay still has the face, dignity and honor, he should release Wesley So now. Dont wait for the world to see how corrupt the NCFP have become under your failed leadership.

There is no "rational" reason for Philippines Chess to pony up the money. They are "losing" a great player. The US Chess Federation is gaining here, they need to find the money. imho.

This is not about what is morally right. I don't even understand why anyone should have to find that money in the first place... but that's corrupt FIDE.

FIDE Rating as of June 2014: (1) Nakamura, Hikaru 2775; (2) Kamsky, Gata 2712; (3) Onischuk,Alexander 2659; (4) Akibian, Varyzhan 2653; (5) Gareev, Timur 2636; (6) Shankland, Samuel 2632; (7) Robson, Ray 2628; (8) Lenderman, Aleksandr 2600; (9) Erenburg, Sergey 2600. That us 7 Super GM and 2 Hydra GM. Much better than the Philippine players with only 1 super GM in GM Sadorra. If you dont call it competitions, i dont know what to say anymore. Besides, funding wise for trainings, fide sponsored international events and other perks is WAY MUCH BETTER in US than in Philippines. GM Wesley So can go further with his chess career with the support of US Chess Federation.

All that GM Wesley So needs is support from his federation, and it seems the Philippines Chess Federation cannot give it to him. He look for the US as they provide ample support for their chess players. Thats the kind of federation he needs to become elite GM. Give the kid a break, RELEASE him from "CAPTIVITY" and turn him over to the US Chess Federation. He may represent and carry the US flag in international conpetitions and give them honors BUT as he said HE IS STILL FILIPINO at heart. Filipino chess fans will continue to support him no matter flag or federation he plays. GO Wesley So.

It is so sad that someone could just do this to our country in the guise of corruption.

Unlike the United States, we filipinos have few sports heroes and whenever we have, we become very proud of them, we follow their exploits even in the most unholy hours such as when Wesley So plays abroad. They become one of our few sources of joy. Losing one after getting a foreign adviser/coach who knows nothing about Filipino pride is just so hurting.

Ms. polgar, you said that Wesley has chosen to leave Philippine chess federation because of corruption. But corruption is prevalent in the Philippines wherever one goes and I am sure Wesley is not new to it. Just like all the rest of us who remained in the country, we have learned how to live with it and try to be the best of what we can be despite of it.

The Philippines has been a poor and corrupt country and whatever limited resources we have need to be shared to all. If Wesley was not supported well, everyone else does not. Not one does here in the Philippines except maybe the corrupt politicians. But it is no reason to abdicate the country. Instead, it should serve as a battle cry for us to fight for our country and be the best of what we could be so that we could leave a better country to the next generation. Less opportunity is not a hindrance to chess or any forms of success. Just ask Magnus Carlsen.

It is the americans themselves who said that we should ask not what we can do for our country and not what our country can do to us. Whatever happened to this, Ms Polgar? Have you lost track of your senses? Just because you fled your federation does not mean that you should also encourage your students to do the same.

We have a few remaining sports heroes who have decided to fight it out for the country with very little in exchange. We can cite Manny Pacquiao, Gilas Pilipinas and the Azkhals among many others. They work hard for the country even if the government could not return as much favor to them. We are proud of them and I hope that no foreign coach would whisper sweet nothings on their ears, demonizing our country, and luring our hero out of our fold. Hope you will approve this comment if you are really advocating fairness.

It is much deeper than you think or read about. He tried everything he could. He had no choice.

Please do not blame the innocent victim. If the Filipinos want to avoid this, unite and fix the problems. The solution is not to fault the helpless.

Susan,

I agree. Wesley's case is different to the people cited by Edmundo. Wesley is, as you say, helpless. It is wise and brave on his part to move on and fulfil his dreams while it is still possible. Corruption in the Philippines is endemic. It is not up to Wesley to fight it and sacrifice his bright future for anyone. Let the naysayers say what they will and let Wesley reach his full potential with God's sovereign help.

Oh Edmundo Manlapao Don't blame Susan Polgar with the mess created by thr NCFP, it is internally generated chaos in Philippine Chess. If Susan was "demonizing" and "whispering nothing" as you claim, she would have insist Wesley So to immediately change federation 2 years ago when Wesley So took the chess college scholarship BUT SHE DID NOT. Heck even the request for transfer was made top secret for 1 year in an attempt to fix the mess created by the NCFP. And the decision to change federation was the last optiob as yoy have a non-cooperative, non-supportive and politicize National Chess Federation of the Philippines which ironically is being headed by a corrupt politician who knows nothing about chess and if your from the Philippines yoy know who Prospero Pichay is. GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT and READ AND UNDERSTAND the whole story first before your run your mouth uttering bullshit arguments whose main reason is Filipino Pride. And if we follow your shallow logic, it seems your willing to sacrifice Wesley So chances of further inproving elsewhere who are willing to provide hin with the needed support to continue his ascend to the elite level chess and hopefully have the opportunity to play in World Title match. Give the guy a break, if thr NCFP is adamant and non-supportive what is the use of staying? An opportunity is provided elsewhere he should take it unless YOU WANT to SPENT for the training and travel abroad of Wesley So to compete we have no problem with it then. Ask Magnus Carlsen how the Norway Chess federation supporting him ala all out support. Or go ask the Vietnam Chess Federation how GM Le is well-supported. And look what happen to GM Mark Paragua who just fade to glory because of little support offered by NCFP. And that goes to other upcoming chess prodigies like IM Haridas who have to look for funding elsewhere to get his IM Title because of the non-support of NCFP. Is this your idea of Filipino Pride? You want Wesley So to suffer the same fate as them all because of your Filipino Pride argument and all those shit stuff you said. Lastly, Wesley So is NOT ABDICATING the Philippines he will just be playing for the US Chesd Federation. Neither is he renouncing his Philippine citizenship as of now (although he may in the future if he wants to). He is still a Filipino. Do you call people abdicating their nationsality just because they change citizenship, in this case it is a mere federation. AND DO YOU EVEN KNOW what the term ABDICATE means before you even start arguing. GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT EDMUNDO BEFORE YOU START TO RUN YOUR MOUTH otherwise, your just making us Filipinos look like a FOOL with your baseless and out of the line arguments. I rest my case. TY

Though it pains us for your transfer, we respect. But any dismay or insensitive phrases towards NCFP is a bad move. Just go, and leave us, we dont need you.

Anonymous said...

Actually Edmundo Susan Polgar knows far more better than you with your so called Filipino Pride. All you do is sit and do nothing but to cheer Wesley which is not bad at all. But Susan Polgar took Wesley So in her care when he was practically nowhere to go with his stagnant growth in Philippines. Barely 2 years, a and look what Wesley So now # 15 in the Fide World Ranking as of June 2014. That is giving the Filipinos pride of his accomplishment - the real Filipino pride not the twisted meaning as you are claiming. Wesley So practically floated in the 2600 level and he cant do no more unless he gets support financially for further extensive trainings and competitions which the NCFP is not willing enough to provide. YOU DONT HOLD people from taking opportunities as Wesley So has now just because of you "Filipino Pride" mentality. Otherwise, why do a lot of Filipinos go to US to work? Because they want a good life and insisting and your Filipino pride leads you to nowhere. Because if we follow your arguments and line of thoughts as if your insulting all overseas Filipino workers because they choose to work abroad and ditch their pride. They make us proud because they help keep the Philippine economy afloat. Holding back Wesley So just because of your pride is SELFFISH and SELF-SERVING. And Wesley SO is a grown man capable of making smart decision based on prevailing situations. Decision for his best interest not your interest. He wont be what he is now if he can be simply "manipulated" by foreign coach as you claim. IT's Wesley So personal decision you have to respect it. In the same manner as Wesley So has no business interfering with your decision in life. You make decisions, you learn to live with it whatever happens.

Wesley definitely made the right choice. He can no longer take the pressure of chess that has been driven by politics. I won't be surprised if other Filipino Grand Masters will follow soon.

Edmundo Manlapao

Your comment is the typical third world mentality. I'm a Filipino myself and the problem for the country is people with your cheap mentality. Wes has his right and independence to chose what is the best for him. It is simple as that.

Anonymous said...

Your from NCFP :) If you dont need Wesley So sabihan mo
mga officials to RELEASE him and give their CONSENT to change federation from Pinas to US. Otherwise, NCFP is the one making a bad move by holding Wesley So hostage in the mess rouge NCFP officials like your boss created. The Filipino people DONT NEED your kind brod, just go and leave NCFP huwag kapit tuko sa position.

Anonymous said...

The TRUTH HURTS ouch :) If NCFP wants to end this long story all they have to do is SIGN the CONSENT to transfer of GM Wesley So to the US Chess Federation. That is if NCFP Prospero Pichay and other officials has the BALLS to sign it. The sooner your sign, the lesser will the Filipino chess fans hate you guys. Sign the consent, END OF STORY. Simple.

Anonymous said...

The only way to convince Wesley to stay is if the NCFP (and all of its officials) will be replaced by a new Chess Federation, the one that is not driven by politics.

"The Philippines has been a poor and corrupt country and whatever limited resources we have need to be shared to all. If Wesley was not supported well, everyone else does not. Not one does here in the Philippines except maybe the corrupt politicians. But it is no reason to abdicate the country." LOL. Filipino crab mentality clearly shown by this Edmundo. He's practically saying that if majority of Filipinos are unable to reach their full potential in any field, then no other Filipino should, either. "Ang mamatay nang dahil sa iyo" ? Yeah, right, Edmundo. If all Filipinos think the way you do, they definitely will "die because of their country".

You see Edmundo, Wesley So has world-class talent, and that talent needs to be developed to it's full potential. If it requires switching to another federation, then by all means let him do it. Think of all the great games he will be able to play in the future. Think of all the entertainment that this will provide to the chess world. Think of how much he'll contribute to chess history with his future games. Talent like this doesn't spring up often in the Philippines. So please stop trying to rain on his parade. And stop dissing his trainer, too. Susan Polgar has done a marvelous job at training Wesley. To put it another way, if Pacquiao didn't switch trainers, where do you think he'd be right now? Probably mopping some gym floor instead of being one of the greatest boxers of all time.

GM Wesley So theme song dedicated to the NCFP officials headed by the heartless Prospero Pichay. From the famous song of Engelbert Humperdinck - PLEASE RELEASE ME LET ME GO, For I dont love you anymore ( NCFP as long as Pichay as the head) , To waste our lived would be a sin, RELEASE ME AND LET ME LOVE AGAIN ( I love you US Chess Federation). PLEASE RELEASE ME , cant you see. You've be a fool to cling to me (You dont even adequately support me NCFP) To live a lie would bring us pain, SO RELEASE ME AND LET ME LOVE AGAIN NCFP... I will always be a Filipino at heart no matter what flag I represent, I just need support and you can't provide. Uncle Sam can provide... SO PLEASE RELEASE ME LET ME GO... SIGN THE CONSENT TO TRANSFER and off I go... Regardless what federation I play for people will always know me as the Wesley So from the Philippines and would always make the Filipino Proud. :d

Anonymous said...

Maybe Mr. Pichay will waive the transfer fee and will allow Wesley to change federation ... But that will happen in 2016 before the campaign period

Anonymous said...

Just a side note, now the Wesley So wont be playing in Tromso Chess Olympiad, what are the tournaments line up for him? For the benefit of his chess fan, can someone give us a hint or something? PS: If NCFP President still has a conscience and heart, the most honorable and right thing to do is to RELEASE Wesley So by SIGNING the CONSENT to transfer to another federartion. If you cant support him, give him up so he can find other federation to adequately support him.

I find it hard to understand the context of the 50k euro fee. Who is it paid to? Fide or NCFP? Or is NCFP part of Fide? A little background would be nice. As for the fee, the 50k fee could be crowdsourced if we knew the deadline. That is, if the deadline for paying was, say, the end of this year, you could set up a fund at one of the sites like Kickstarter, and if 100 people chipped in 50 euro it would solve the problem. As an aside, I think the two-year rule is rather harsh and perhaps Kasparov was right in trying to end Fide.

Anonymous said...

Do not pay the required euro fee or give way to solicitation. Money will just go to corrupt NCFP.

Hello Wesley, once you've reached the stars, please remember that a true leader thinks beyond the self: he builds institutions and mentors others to be as successful as he is. The condition of Philippine chess is currently far from ideal, and several years from now you will be in the best position to make that change.

Rephrasing uncle Ben, with great ability comes great responsibility. I myself have trained in a foreign country once, and I have since returned to train others young Filipino talents to be better than myself. While I was away I was observing how institutions function properly and how they are able to fund their operations. This has paid off, since I lead my own little group using funds that I have learned to seek and secure. I look forward to seeing you play again for the Philippine flag and I wish upon you many talented young students when you become a mentor yourself. The best GMs train other GMs, and if these students become greater and achieve more than their teachers, then this is true success.

And thank you Susan for all your help.

Dear Susan,

Many of the posters here are probably in need of more information. I presume that you know the whole story, so please help explain:

1. Why Wesley cannot continue to train and play in the US without switching federations. Is there significant financial support which will ONLY be available if he is under USCF? Is this financial support badly needed NOW? If this is the main issue, then it should be a matter of marketing Wesley's potential to PH billionaires. I'm sure Manny Pangilinan and Ramon Ang (2 big CEOs) will readily spare a few millions once they see that Wesley is truly a potential world champion. Pangilinan bankrolls the national basketball team which, at best, can only hope to be Asian champions.

2. Are there elite tournaments that will ONLY invite him if he changes his chess group? He just played in Unive, Tata Steel A, and Capablanca, so I don't see why this will be an issue.

3. Why can't he wait another 2 years before he seriously considers switching? He has made great strides under SPICE for 2 years. He has at least 2 more years under your wings to continue his progress. Will there be a sudden difference in training if he is a USCF member? I suppose not.

If the problem is simply that Wesley can no longer play for the current NCFP because of who head(s) it, then concerned chess fans should focus their creative juices on how these officials can be changed. Losing a gem like Wesley should be unacceptable. Chess officials are a dime a dozen, but exceptionally gifted players are priceless and only come once in a generation. The choice, therefore, is a no-brainer.

Just look at Le Quang Liem of Vietnam. He's a 2700+ GM but he never turned his back & never changed federation. It's because he has the full financial support from his country's chess federation. The Philippine chess federation will not give its 100% financial support to Wesley So because it's being run by a fat, greedy, despicable looking & corrupt crocodile in the name of Phatpero Pichay.

News from around the Philippine Chess corridors that 2 MORE PHILIPPINE CHESS GRANDMASTERS DECIDED TO CHANGE FEDERATION from Philippines to another country. Rumors has it that these 2 GM WITDREW from participating in the 2014 Dubai World Rapid and Chess Championship. Gee! I suspect one of the GM is US based GM Catalino Saddorra and either GM Oliver Barbosa or Mark Paragua. GEE the problem really is the National Chess Federation of the Philippines leadership lack of support for its chess players. If these 2 GM will change Federation, that would mean that the # 1,2 and 3 rank Philippine Grandmasters all will leave the Philippines to seek better support from other foreign chess federation. That would wipe out the Philippine Team in the Tromso Chess Olympiad. All because of politics and poor leadership of NCFP President Prospero Pichay.

Anonymous said...

2 more Grandmasters from the Philippines CHANGING FEDERATION. Perhaps GM Catalino Saddorra and GM Mark Paragua, both of whom are US based already. They would most likely switch to US Chess Federation. That would mean the number 1 and 2 rank Philippine GM going to US Chess Federation. GM Mark Paragua is the first Super GM of the Philippines but due to lack of support from NCFP faded in obscurity and with lack of further training and support lost his Super GM status as he was badly beaten in international Tournaments. Another Super GM-to-be GM Oliver Barboso might also consider changing federation. The Truth hurts, if they cant get support from their local federation they will switch federation to one who can better support them. SIMPLE

Anonymous said...

This should be retitled to: GM Wesley So and Company (2 more Phil GMs) to SWITCH FEDERATION from Philippines to US Chess Federation.... DUE to lack of support and incompetence of NCFP Official lead by the infamous Prospero Pichay. Great work Pichay, you completely WIPE OUT the Philippine Chess Team :(

Anonymous said...

In behalf of the many Filipinos in the USA and around the world who are the real supporters of Wesley So, I would like to say THANK YOU.

Anonymous said...

How can we encourage the other Filipino chess grandmasters who are in the process of switching to another chess federation to come out and say something?

Anonymous said...

NCFP, could you just please let him move on to the US federation? If he doesn't want to play for the Philippines, then so be it.

In all honesty, I don't understand changing allegiances. OK, so the NCFP doesn't support him, so what? Is there any other way you can get support, such as corporate sponsorships? Take a page out of Mr Torre. He's had some spats with local chess organizations, but he's persevered. Maybe he didn't maximize his full potential as a chess player (or maybe he has), but every Filipino knows him. Besides, chess isn't that big of a deal in the US. You can be working champion carrying the colors of America, but no one will know you. Ultimately, though, it's your choice.

As to the NCFP, if you can't even protect your best player from bolting, then all of you should just resign out of shame.

Anonymous said...

The only way to encourage other Pinoy chess players to come out in the open is to FORM A CHESS PLAYERS UNION. They will have one voice with no outside influence and therefore could air their grievances.

It's not a tall order to form a union. As Pacquiao's trainer always says, you only need BALLS to do it.

The best thing to do right now is to agree to his (So) offer to play for the country one last time in the World Chess Olympiad in Tromso, Norway this August and SET HIM FREE. IN THE END, IT WILL BE UP THE NCFP LEADERSHIP TO MAKE A FINAL DECISION ON THAT MATTER."

Latest from the Philippines: NCFP President Prospero Pichay STILL REFUSED TO GIVE CONSENT TO TRANSFER of GM Wesley So from Philippines to US Chess Federation. Rumors has it the Pichay WILL NEVER GIVE THE CONSENT TO TRANSFER AS A PUNISHMENT TO GM WESLEY SO. He is out to destroy and sabotage Wesley So chess chess career by refusing to grant GM So request for transfer. That is the kind of leader Pichay is. Its scary to think that this guy wants to be Fide President for Asia, it would be the whole Asian Federation that would surely be in a mess.

I don't know why a lot of people are automatically heaping the blame on the NCFP. We don't know all the facts of the case, the dispute. All we have are So's and his coach's claims as to why he doesn't like paying for the Philippines. Personally, I find the angle (that the NCFP doesn't support him) quite questionable. Of course, the Philippines can't support him like the US can. But, the mere fact that his stipend is the highest tier among Filipino athletes means he IS getting support.

@ Are you blind allan? You actually reading the news back in the Philippines or are you an NCFP guy? Its all over the sports news, from Inquirer, philstar, gma, abs-cbn, spin.ph etc... Arent you not watching news? Its not only So and Susan "claim" as you had been ranting... NCFP side was also exposed... NCFP officials have spoken... PSC... GM Torre... and you fucking now who Prospero Pichay is in the Phippines... And you call the angle of NCFP lack of support questionable? Duh wake up.. it is not only Wesley So packing his bag... You have GM Oliver Barbosa and Mark Paragua too! And there is a big possibility GM Catalino Saddora too! Ask yourself Allan, 3 or 4 Philippine GM leaving the Philippines for other federation due to non-support or lack of it by NCFP under the leadership of President Prospero Pichay still questionable? Grow up Allan and read the news before blubbing your mouth with all those bullshit questionable angle you raise.

Anonymous said...

Allan is blind he does not read and fully understand the news lol And he calls 3 to 4 Philippine GM's changing federation to perhaps the US Chess federation due to lack of support from the NCFP and PSC a questionable angle bwahahaha! FYI Allan the NCFP DO NOT provide the allowance of athletes like So, it is the Philippine Sports Commission. The PSC, though provides monthly allowance, is deem inadequate. All the NCFP does is recomnend the chessers to be granted allowance, nothing else. They DO NOT provide allowance to chessers and certainly they DO NOT provide training opportunities for our chess players. And GM Wesley DOES NOT receive the "highest tier stipend among Filipino athletes" as you claim. Go see how much the Philippine Volcanos, Philippine Azkals to name a few with a much higher allowance than any sports association in the Phippines. Stop, look and listen before you run your mouth with twisted questionable angle theory.

Would Mr Manny Pangilinan answer this question, why is it that you have all the money to spend in million of dollars to import, naturalize an NBA player to be able to beef up the gilas team in the world basketball championship knowing fully well that we dont stand an iota of chance of becoming world basketball champion not even in the next 100 years, while neglecting to support sports like chess were we have the greatest chance of becoming world champion in the person of the 20 yr old child prodigy Wesley
So. Mr Pangilinan we do not even have to import and naturalize a 7 footer from the US and Europe to accomplish this dream. You see sometimes this is how weird and stupid our policy makers both in and out of the govt think, thats why I cant blame why Wesley and the thousand others right thinking Filipinos would change their allegiance and become US citizens, and to our countrymen do not blame them but rather blame the stupid policy makers both in and out of the govt.

Obviously, Mr Manny Pangilinan he is a huge basketball fan...

Good for Pinoy Basketball fans, he is promoting the game and supporting Gilas Pilipinas for 2014 FIBA basketball world cup in Spain.

Too bad for us Pinoy Chess Fans, I am not sure if anyone is actually promoting and supporting the game to our country. If ever NCFP did, I guess they are not doing it right. We need someone from the Private Sector... The likes of Pangilinan (basketball), Puyat (Billards), Vintage Sport (Amateur boxing + Pacquiao) to promote and market the game to the chess fans.

Pichay? Is he ever played chess in International Level? I also wondering if he play good? And seriously??! how the hell he become the President of NCFP???! He reminds me of Joey Lina, which he reminds that former politicians and sport governing body organization doesn't mixed well.

Oh yeah...

Hey Mr Wesley So, whatever happens... I support you...
As fan of the chess game. Please do your best to be the greatest Filipino GM of our time. :))
